As you continue building trust as the foundation of your strategy, we’ll add in additional areas of focus. Question 2 is about communication. To truly engage your team, they need to understand your vision and how their work contributes to the bigger picture. Poor communication can tank an otherwise excellent strategy.

Welcome back to the Questions for Leaders Series, where we’re exploring the most common disconnects between great strategies and the teams who need to implement them. Today, we’re tackling the importance of communicating with clarity.

Question 2: Do They Understand? When employees are confused about the direction, misaligned in their efforts, or unsure how their work fits into the grand scheme, execution suffers.

On the other hand, when employees grasp the strategy, they’re more engaged, make better decisions, and collaborate more effectively. A study by Gallup found that highly engaged teams are 21% more productive than those with low engagement.

So, how can you ensure your teams understand your strategy?

#1 – Communicate the “Why”

Don’t just share what the strategy is; explain why it matters. Why is it important for the company? Provide the rationale and purpose behind your vision. Use storytelling, case studies, and personal anecdotes to help employees connect with the strategy.

#2 – Make it Accessible

Present your strategy in a clear, concise, and relatable manner. Break down complex concepts and use language that resonates with your team instead of the latest business buzzwords. Direct managers influence the team’s perception of the importance and impact of any strategy. Therefore, extra attention and time should be devoted to making sure those conversations go well.

Provide managers with advance notice of changes and support them with talking points, FAQs, and other resources to help them confidently address questions and concerns. Recognize and celebrate managers who excel at translating strategy into meaningful action for their teams.

The Bottom Line – Communication is Critical

Clarity is key to engaging your employees and driving successful strategic initiatives. By communicating the “why,” making the strategy accessible, encouraging two-way communication, and empowering direct managers to translate strategy, you can ensure your team is aligned and motivated to bring your vision to life.

Next time, we’ll explore another crucial question: “Have I Provided What They Need?” Until then, focus on building trust and clarity, and watch your strategic initiatives soar.

More Reading

Question 1: Do They Trust Me?

HBR – How to Communicate Your Company’s Strategy Effectively

Prosci – Why Some Communications Work and Some Don’t

You’re a visionary leader with a well thought-out strategy for growing the business.
